Chinook Salmon

Chinook Salmon

There are 2 different seasons, or runs,  of Chinook Salmon in Oregon.   They are the Spring Run and Fall run.  Although the fish are of the same species there are some subtle differences between them

Spring Chinook are a little smaller tha n the Fall Chinook.   Fish generally run 12-15 pounds with a few fish in the 20 lb range.   Fall Chinook average closer to 20 lbs and there are some fish taken every year in the 40 lb range

The Spring Chinook tend to have more oil in the meet and many consider them a better eating fish than a Fall Chinook.

Chinook Salmon are known for keeping the fight at the deepest part of the waters they can get too.   Chinook are very strong fish and take a number of reel screaming runs before being netted.
